History

Subject Lead: Gemma Riggs

At BCS Prep, History inspires pupils to explore the past and understand how it shapes the world today. Through stories, enquiry, and investigation, children develop a sense of chronology, identity, and cultural awareness, helping them appreciate their own heritage and that of others.

What Pupils Learn

Early Years
History is introduced through the ‘Understanding the World’ area of learning. Pupils explore past and present, sequence familiar events, discuss family history, and develop early skills of observation, questioning, and recognising change over time.

Key Stage 1
Children begin to think like historians by exploring artefacts, stories, and historical sources. They learn about significant people and events, visit places of historical interest, and ask questions such as “How do we know?” to build curiosity and understanding.

Key Stage 2
Pupils study key periods of British and world history, developing secure chronological understanding. They learn to use evidence, explore cause and consequence, compare viewpoints, and make links between past and present, building strong enquiry and critical thinking skills.

How We Teach

History is taught through practical activities, real-world contexts, and cross-curricular links. Lessons are inclusive and differentiated, supported by technology, with challenge and extension to stretch confident learners.

Enrichment & Assessment

Learning is enriched through trips, workshops, themed days, drama, and our whole-school ‘Mystery History’ artefact. Progress is assessed through observation, classwork, and end-of-unit judgements using Sonar, with pupils reflecting on their learning at the start and end of each topic.
