At BCS Prep, Mathematics is taught to build confidence, curiosity and enjoyment. From early number exploration to increasingly complex problem-solving, pupils develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts and learn to apply their knowledge with accuracy and confidence in meaningful, real-world contexts.

What Pupils Learn

Early Years
Children explore Mathematics through play-based learning, developing early number recognition, counting skills, pattern awareness and an understanding of shape and measure. Through practical, everyday experiences, they begin to use mathematical language with growing confidence.

Key Stage 1
Pupils build confidence with number and calculation, developing fluency in addition and subtraction before exploring multiplication and division. Practical and visual approaches support learning in shape, space and measure, while pupils develop their ability to solve problems and explain their mathematical thinking.

Key Stage 2
Pupils deepen their understanding of the four operations and secure their knowledge of times tables, fractions, decimals and percentages. They apply these skills across geometry, measurement and data handling, developing strong reasoning, accuracy and problem-solving skills in preparation for the next stage of their education.

How We Teach

Mathematics is taught through practical, hands-on activities and meaningful real-world contexts, helping pupils understand how their learning can be applied beyond the classroom. Lessons are inclusive and differentiated, supported by purposeful use of technology, with opportunities for challenge, deeper thinking and independent problem-solving.

Enrichment & Assessment

Learning is enriched through competitions and challenges including Doodle Maths, NSPCC Number Day, inter-school quizzes and a Year 6 enterprise project. Progress is carefully monitored through ongoing teacher assessment and termly assessments, helping pupils build confidence and identify their next steps.

Celebrating Achievement

Mathematical achievement is celebrated throughout the year, recognising progress, effort and enthusiasm alongside attainment. Weekly Doodle Awards highlight pupils’ commitment and success, while competitions, quizzes and classroom challenges provide opportunities for children to share their skills and take pride in their mathematical development.
