Where the Journey Begins: Life in Our Kindergarten at Bournemouth Collegiate Prep School

There’s a particular kind of magic in those early days of school—the moment a child’s curiosity catches fire, and they realise learning is something to love. That’s the magic we protect and grow in our Kindergarten Nursery (ages 3–4) at Bournemouth Collegiate Prep School.

I often say that what happens now echoes all the way through a child’s school life. Getting it right from the start matters. That’s why our Kindergarten is deliberately designed around skilled teaching, a calm and beautiful environment, and a curriculum that follows the child.

As Assistant Headteacher & Head of Early Years, I bring over 25 years’ experience in Early Years education. I lead a team of qualified teachers and dedicated practitioners who share one goal: to help every child feel known, safe, and excited to learn. From day one, we notice the small things; interests, strengths, sparks of confidence and use them as the foundation for each child’s journey.

A Curiosity Approach Setting

Our Kindergarten is proudly inspired by The Curiosity Approach. Walk into our rooms and you’ll notice the difference immediately: warm, homely spaces, natural light, authentic and open‑ended resources—from shells and fabric to wooden tools, baskets, clipboards and real‑life objects. These materials invite children to explore deeply, imagine, compare, tinker, and problem‑solve.

Why does this matter? Because when the environment is uncluttered and beautiful, children feel calm and confident. When resources are open‑ended, play becomes richer and more creative. And when adults listen closely and model language, children’s thinking grows in complexity and depth. Our setting is intentionally designed to help children succeed at their own pace—to concentrate, collaborate, and follow their natural curiosity.

Learning That Follows the ChildBCS April26MP 145

In Kindergarten, the child is truly at the centre of everything we do. We work with Planning in the Moment, responding to children’s interests right there and then. If a child is building a nest from leaves, we might wonder together about strength and shelter; if pebbles become “ingredients”, we might explore measuring and counting; if a story captures the room, we’ll ride its ideas into drawing, role‑play, and writing marks with meaning.

This responsive approach:

  • Builds strong relationships
  • Keeps learning joyful and relevant
  • Nurtures confidence and independence
  • Promotes language, imagination, and deeper thinking

Every child is seen. Every voice is heard. Every discovery matters.

The Outdoors: Our Second Classroom

We are fortunate to have beautiful school grounds, and we use them every day with our Kindergarten Nursery children. The outdoors isn’t an add‑on for us; it is a core part of our curriculum. Children explore our on‑site forest area, hunt for minibeasts, notice seasonal changes, build dens, balance, dig, and observe wildlife. These real‑life experiences develop physical confidence, resilience, teamwork, language—and a deep connection with the natural world.

Some of our richest moments happen outside: a trail of tiny prints after rain, the engineering challenge of a log bridge, a quiet pause to listen to birdsong. Out there, curiosity is irresistible.

BCS April26MP 133Specialist Teaching from the Start

Belonging to the wider BCS community means our youngest learners benefit from specialist‑taught sessions, including music with our Head of Music. These experiences broaden children’s horizons, enrich their language and rhythm, and build confidence through performance, pattern, and play. Children then also see themselves as part of a thriving school, rooted in Kindergarten Nursery, connected to all that lies ahead.

Ready for Reception—and Ready for Life

Our aim is not only school readiness, but readiness for a life of learning. Through our skill‑based, curiosity‑driven curriculum, children develop:

  • Imagination and original ideas
  • Communication and language—listening, speaking, storytelling
  • Foundations for literacy and numeracy woven through play
  • Problem‑solving and critical thinking
  • Social skills, independence, and resilience
  • Emotional wellbeing and a secure sense of self

By the time they move into Reception, our children are confident, capable, and excited- they are accustomed to asking questions, trying things out, collaborating, and proudly sharing what they know.

An Invitation

When families visit our Kindergarten, many say it feels different—calmer, more thoughtful, quietly purposeful. That feeling is deliberate. It’s what happens when you combine expert teaching, a nurturing environment, and a curriculum that follows the child.

This is where the journey begins: with curiosity, care, and the joy of discovery.
At Bournemouth Collegiate Prep School Kindergarten, children aren’t just prepared for school—they are inspired for life.

If you’d like to see our Kindergarten in action, I’d love to welcome you for a visit.
