On 8 May 2026, the world celebrates the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough – a voice that has inspired generations to explore, understand and protect the natural world. While many know him as a global icon, Bournemouth Collegiate School is fortunate to hold a personal memory of his remarkable legacy.

There was a special sense of anticipation in Milton Mount Hall on 23rd May 1980 as pupils, staff and guests gathered for Speech Day. Every seat was filled and conversations fell silent as Sir David arrived to officially open the new school building.

“It is with the greatest pleasure I unveil this plaque and declare this splendid building open.”

The moment was unforgettable. More than a celebrated broadcaster, Sir David spoke with warmth, humour and belief in the importance of curiosity and education. He reflected on how his own passion for the natural world began through the encouragement of a teacher, reminding pupils that discovery often starts with a single spark of inspiration.

In true Attenborough style, his stories brought the audience to life. Tales of encounters with gorillas in Africa – including the memorable advice that “manners maketh gorillas” – drew laughter across the hall, while his description of playful baby gorillas undoing his shoelaces delighted everyone listening. Beneath the humour was a powerful message about respect, learning and our connection with the world around us.

Before leaving, Sir David planted a tree within the school grounds, speaking passionately about conservation and the responsibility future generations carry in protecting the planet.

One hundred years on, Sir David Attenborough continues to inspire with wisdom, compassion and curiosity. At BCS, we are proud not only to celebrate his extraordinary life, but also to remember the day he stood among us and inspired our community in person. From Friday 7th, pupils and staff will take part in activities celebrating his work and reinforcing our commitment to protecting our planet.

Wishing Sir David a wonderful 100th birthday.
