Meet Amane, former Sixth Form boarder, who joined us at the end of 2021. Amane loves being part of the BCS community and has exciting plans for the future...

Q: Can you tell us a bit about you and why you chose BCS?

A: My Mother is Japanese, and my Father is Italian. I came to BCS in September. I chose BCS because of the small number of students, I felt like the relationship between the teachers and students was really close. I really liked the small community feel that the school has, and I felt as though the teachers had more time to concentrate on each student. The location is very good as it is not far from the town centre and it is close to the beach. You can have a good life in and out of school. I take History, Business and English Literature, I found my subjects very challenging, but at the same time they are very interesting to do and I enjoy them all. Because English isn’t my first language, I need more support than other students, I get this support from the teachers, they always make time for me and I have never felt lost, or stuck.

Q: When you joined, did you feel part of the community?

A: Yes, my peers are very friendly, they always talk to me and I have really good friends here and I love being at school!

Q: How do you find boarding?

A: I feel like it is a very comfortable place to be, it is a place you feel safe, the boarding staff are always there to support you and the staff feel like big sisters so you can talk about anything. I feel like I am at home but can also socialise.

Q: Who is your favourite teacher at BCS?

A: Mr Pumphrey is the first teacher that I had that treats us like grown‑ups, we are like equals with a good level of respect, so I really like that relationship. I can ask any question about any curiosity that I have and I really like discussing what is going on in the world currently with him. We talk in tutor time with other members of the tutor groups, which I think is a good way to start having conversations. These conversations really help us to grow, I think it is important to know what is going on in the world and we have a responsibility to be aware of everything going on in society.
