At BCS Prep, Geography inspires pupils to explore and understand the world, its people and its environments. Through enquiry-led learning, children develop strong geographical knowledge and skills while discovering how places are shaped, connected and influenced by human and physical processes.

What Pupils Learn

Early Years
Geography begins with exploration of the immediate environment. Through practical activities and outdoor learning, children develop observational skills and an early understanding of place, direction and change.

Key Stage 1
Pupils explore their local area and the wider world through discussion, fieldwork, maps and globes. They develop locational knowledge, learn about key human and physical features and begin to compare different places.

Key Stage 2
Pupils deepen their understanding of human and physical geography through increasingly independent enquiry. They use maps, data, research and fieldwork to investigate geographical themes and processes, while exploring sustainability, environmental change and the relationship between people and the planet.

How We Teach

Geography is taught through engaging, enquiry-led learning that encourages pupils to ask questions, investigate and think critically. Fieldwork, map work and data collection provide practical experiences, while real-world issues bring learning to life. Cross-curricular links and digital tools further support research, mapping and presentation skills.

Enrichment & Assessment

Learning is enriched through fieldwork, educational visits, outdoor learning and Forest School, alongside eco-projects, cultural events and opportunities such as Eco Club. Progress is assessed through observation, discussion and pupils’ work, with end-of-unit judgements and self-reflection helping pupils recognise their progress and next steps.

Celebrating Achievement

Geographical achievement is recognised through house points, certificates and displays of pupils’ work. Presentations, projects and assemblies provide opportunities to share learning with the wider school community, celebrating knowledge alongside curiosity, enquiry skills and independent thinking.
