At BCS Prep, Science inspires pupils to explore and understand the natural world with curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. Through practical experiments, observation and enquiry, children develop a secure understanding of scientific concepts while learning to ask questions, solve problems and draw evidence-based conclusions.

What Pupils Learn

Pupils develop their scientific knowledge progressively, exploring key concepts, principles and processes across the curriculum. They learn to observe closely, plan and carry out investigations, analyse data and communicate their findings clearly. As they progress through the school, pupils become increasingly confident and independent scientific thinkers, recognising the relevance of science to everyday life and the wider world.

How We Teach

Science is taught weekly through engaging, practical lessons, with units carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time. Hands-on investigations and experiments are central to learning, while cross-curricular links with reading, writing, art and technology provide meaningful contexts. Digital tools also support research, recording and presentation.

Enrichment & Assessment

Learning extends beyond the classroom through laboratory investigations, fieldwork, educational visits, external speakers, workshops and virtual experiences. Progress is assessed continuously through observation, discussion, practical investigations and written work, with end-of-unit assessments helping teachers identify understanding and plan appropriate next steps.

Celebrating Achievement

Scientific achievement is celebrated through classwork, assemblies, projects and school awards. Pupils have opportunities to present experiments and investigations and share their discoveries with the wider school community, recognising curiosity, creativity and scientific thinking while building confidence and pride in their learning.
