At BCS Prep, Art and Design Technology are vibrant, hands-on subjects that nurture creativity, curiosity and confidence. Pupils are encouraged to see themselves as artists, designers and problem-solvers, developing the skills and freedom to express ideas, experiment and approach challenges with imagination.

What Pupils Learn

Early Years
Creativity is at the heart of learning, with children exploring colour, shape, texture and form through drawing, painting, collage, construction and design. These experiences develop imagination, coordination and confidence as pupils bring their ideas to life.

Key Stage 1
Pupils develop core skills in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and simple mechanisms through practical, exploratory lessons. They encounter a range of artists and designers and begin to plan, create and evaluate their own work, developing independence and creative decision-making.

Key Stage 2
Pupils take part in weekly specialist-taught Art and DT lessons in dedicated studio and workshop spaces. They refine techniques, explore new media and undertake increasingly complex design challenges, using tools, mechanisms and simple electronics to research, design, make and evaluate purposeful products.

How We Teach

Art and DT place the creative process at the heart of learning. Pupils explore a wide range of materials, techniques, artists, designers and cultures while being encouraged to experiment, take creative risks and learn from mistakes. Practical projects develop resilience, resourcefulness, collaboration and problem-solving alongside strong artistic and technical skills.

Enrichment & Assessment

Creativity extends beyond the classroom through competitions, visiting artists, workshops, exhibitions, design challenges and collaborative installations. Progress is assessed through observation, discussion, reflection and completed work, with feedback helping pupils recognise their successes, refine ideas and develop their skills.

Celebrating Achievement

Pupils’ artwork and designs are showcased throughout the school through displays, exhibitions and collaborative projects, celebrating both individual creativity and the wider BCS creative community. Headteacher’s Awards recognise achievement in Friday assemblies, while an ‘Artist of the Week’ is celebrated each week with their work displayed in the Art room, helping pupils take pride in their creativity and progress.
