Coaching Staff

Sam Woodward | Head Coach

Sam started swimming when he was 12 weeks old and it has been part of his life ever since.

He completed all stages of the learn to swim programme at Newport Leisure Centre before joining Newport & Maindee Olympic Swimming club at the age of 11 when the Maindee Pools in South Wales became his second home.

It wasn’t until Sam was 18 and travelling around Australia that he realised his competitive nature and after spending a period of time with Canberra ASC he believed in his ability and thought about a future in coaching.

What he lacked in ‘natural talent’ he made up for with commitment and determination. Like many people Sam was inspired by a host of wonderful coaches.

Sam has been lucky enough to be coached by several wonderful coaches over the years, from Stuart Morrish, Eric Henderson and Graham Pierce in Newport to Kate Piper in Australia.

He has also had the opportunity to work closely with many of the UK’s finest coaches first being tutored by Bryn Williams on his Level 3 Club Coach Award in Swansea, before having access to the knowledge of Martyn Woodroffe on Swim Wales Talent Camps and then becoming assistant head coach to Graham Bassi at Bournemouth Dolphins where as part of the merge with Ferndown Otters Sam was lucky enough to also work with Tony Watson.

Since hanging up his trunks, Sam has been head coach of Fareham Nomads, Assistant Head Coach and later Head Coach at Bournemouth Dolphins, before merging with Ferndown Otters to create Swim Bournemouth and becoming joint head coach. In addition Sam has been selected as: Hampshire Inter-County team coach, Dorset Inter-County Team Coach, Swim England Programme Dorset Head Coach, Swim England National Programme Skills Coach & the ASA Young Coaches Programme. Most recently Sam has worked alongside Matt Heathcock at Swim Bournemouth.

Sam has a real passion for the sport and prides himself on his coaching expertise being stroke technique and efficiency.

James Ryan | Swimming Coach

Having swam for his whole life and winning regional medals and qualifying for nationals, James started teaching at the age of 12 in the family swim school. This progressed into coaching where he eventually became the head coach of the Penzance Swim Club.
