COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is ideal for those who have a passion for human and plant biology.
It provides a background from which to study essential biological concepts and shows students how to reach an informed viewpoint on current scientific issues.
Studying biology is so valuable. Any newspaper or television programme may well contain references to GM foods, the latest hopes in medicine for cancer and AIDS, or saving a rare species. Biology is fundamental to all of these.
This is a two-year linear A-Level Course.
Theme 1: Development of practical skills (for which a practical endorsement is awarded)
Theme 2: Foundations in biology; cell structure, biological molecules, enzymes, cell division
Theme 3: Exchange and transport; exchange surfaces, transport in animals and plants
Theme 4: Biodiversity, evolution and disease; disease prevention, immune system, biodiversity
Theme 5: Communications, homeostasis and energy; homeostasis, hormones, nervous system, photosynthesis, respiration
Theme 6: Genetics, evolution and ecosystems; cellular control, inheritance, cloning, ecosystems and populations
Biology students at BCS have gone on to study Forensic science, Marine biology, Biochemistry, Medicine, Nursing and Physiotherapy.
