COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is for students who have a real passion for music; they need to be proficient in at least one instrument or voice, have an analytical mind and be very keen to learn. 

Students will learn to perform, to compose, to understand and replicate harmonic patterns, to analyse, to listen perceptively, and to appraise.

Assessment structure

Component 1                                                  Appraising Music (40%)

Section A: Listening test using extracts of music from any genre and style.

Section B: Students are tested on their analytical understanding of the ‘Western classical tradition 1650-1910 and two additional areas of study selected from: Pop music, Music for media, Music for theatre, Jazz, Contemporary traditional music and Art music from 1910.

Component 2                                                  Performance (35%)

Students perform a recital made up of pieces of their choice, lasting 10-16 minutes. Both solo and/or ensemble performances are required.

Component 3:                                                 Composition (25%)

Two compositions are required: one to a brief provided by AQA and the other a free composition in any style for any forces.

What can pupils’ study next?

Music A-Level is highly regarded by further education institutions and employers due to its academic and creative nature. 

Careers that could come directly from studying music are: performer, composer, music therapist, music industry, teaching, song-writing, to name a few.
