COURSE OVERVIEW

A-Level English Literature includes the study of a variety of forms of literature including prose, poetry and drama.

Students will study pre-19th century drama and poetry including one of Shakespeare’s plays. Students will also explore three modern texts and the way they reflect some aspect of modern life. 
 

Assessment structure

Component 1: Shakespeare and pre-1900 poetry and drama 

Component 2: Comparative contextual study 

Component 3: Literature post-1900 

 

What can pupils’ study next?

Most universities offer some form of English Literature or related degree course such as journalism, creative writing, marketing, public relations and media studies. 

The essay writing and research components make it a welcome addition alongside many humanities and social science A-Levels such as History, Sociology, Psychology and Law when applying for those kinds of degrees.
