Congratulations should go to the Bournemouth Collegiate Prep School Eco Group who were visited last week by the Green Flag team to see if they had done enough to become an "Eco School" with a Green Flag Award.

The Eco Group at BCS Prep have been leading whole-school initiatives in three main areas - "marine", "biodiversity" and "waste"; which has increasing recycling, compost collecting and reducing consumption of single use plastic. In order to implement these changes, members of the BCS Prep Eco Group talked in their form groups about the impact of pollution and wastefulness on our marine life.

In March, the group initiatied our first Plastic Free Week which welcomed a Beach Clean on Sandbanks beach, and a site-wide littler picking session involving the whole school.

Rebecca Wyatt, Head of the BCS Eco Group added "Our assessor said she was most impressed by all the work we had done and thought we were very lucky to have such lovely school grounds which lent themselves so well to all our work on biodiversity – the bug hotel, planters, wildflower meadow, bird feeders and hedgehog houses."

For the final part of the accreditation process the School's Eco Group gave a tour of the school and answered some very tricky questions on ‘nurdles’ (a type of marine debris) and battery recycling to name but a few! Luckily, the students passed with flying colours and BCS Prep School is now officially an Eco Green Flag awarded School.

Kay Smith, Head at BCS Prep said "The BCS Prep Eco Group have done some fantastic work educating their peers, and staff, as to the positive impact that that small changes (such as bringing your own water bottle to fill up) can have on the world around us. At BCS Prep we encourage pupils to engage with a wide variety of issues from homeless to the environment - it is wonderful to see the students be so passionate and to such great effect!"

Going forward the School will be collecting plastic lids to donate to Lush, a spectacles recycling collection and a plastic free week just before Half Term - no rest for the eco-minded!
