18 November 2019

Bournemouth Collegiate School have been shortlisted for the prestigious TES Sport Award, for their ability to demonstrate “a commitment to excellence and participating on school sport, and in promoting Health, Wellbeing and Exercise among pupils”.

Seven independent schools have been shortlisted for the award, from an “unparalleled number of entries, all of which were first rate” according to TES Editor Ann Mroz.

Bournemouth Collegiate School has a strong sporting tradition running a number of academies including Swimming, Rowing, Rugby, Football, Basketball, Triathlon and Tennis, alongside more traditional team sports such as Netball and Hockey. The Academies work with a range of professional sporting organisations such as Bath Rugby, Bournemouth AFC and West Hants Tennis Club to provide a platform for young athletes and pupils to reach their potential in sport.

Bournemouth Collegiate Alumni such as Alice Tai (7 X World Champion Swimmer and Paralympian Gold Medallist), Junior Wimbledon players Toby Samuels and Jack Pinnington-Jones, England Volleyball player Iraj Safaee and a number of ISFA National Squad members have all been through the Academies. Current students include Ginetta Junior Champion James Hedley (currently testing for Formula 4) and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Swimming hopeful Leo McCrea.

Richard Harrison-Poole, Director of Sport at Bournemouth Collegiate School explained “The BCS Sports Department works to create an environment where the pupils feel happy to push themselves to their limits and are supported in doing so. The academies primary aim is individual improvement which also feeds into whole school sport improvement. We are passionate about Sport at BCS and have worked hard at building it up to the standard that it is now.”

Head of Bournemouth Collegiate School Russell Slatford added “This is truly excellent news, and absolutely well-deserved. Our Sports Department is a credit to the School – working over two sites they demonstrate the teamwork and dedication that they ask of their students; I am truly very proud of all members of the Sports Department and look forward to the ceremony in February.”
