Sixth Form life at BCS
Bournemouth Collegiate School has the only independent sector co-educational Sixth Form in the Bournemouth-Poole area. The Sixth Form years are hugely important as a transition from the formal structures of Years 7-11 to the much more open, student-centred learning framework to be found at University. The subject learning achieved at AS and A2 levels will, of course, provide an invaluable academic foundation for Higher Education, but the newly-acquired learning skills and attitudes are probably even more important. As the student’s approach changes and matures, they will find themselves taking ever more responsibility for their own learning. This independence, and the creativity to use it effectively, is supported by small class sizes, by a rich curriculum with a range of enrichment activities, and by a staff with a real interest in their subject, their students and the concept of Higher Education. At the same time, Sixth Form
students at BCS gain enormously from playing a leadership role in the school, with both formal and informal responsibilities within the Lower School and with individual younger pupils. The whole experience comes together to make the BCS Sixth Form challenging, exciting and satisfying, whether you are a day student, boarding student – or getting the best of both worlds with flexi-boarding.
Taking Responsibility
Members of the Sixth Form not only have substantial responsibility for their own education, they take responsibility for many aspects of the day-to-day operation of the school, whether as Prefects, Heads of House or Heads of School. These roles are of immense importance to the organisation of a balanced school community in which pupils learn from one another, and also help to build confidence, team skills and leadership skills within the Sixth Form itself.
Above all, they give a real sense of achievement to the Sixth Form years, and make them far more satisfying and enjoyable. Roles of responsibility are available to students who join us from other schools, as well as those who transfer from Year 11 at BCS.
Sixth-Form Enrichment
The Sixth Form enrichment programme adds several dimensions to the life of Year 12 and 13 students. In part, of course, it includes the formal elements of career and university advice – but even here it takes an unconventional approach. The world of work is introduced through the eyes of visiting professional speakers, and university strategies are approached with the help of specialists with close links to the universities. This focus on linking students directly with the world beyond school is part
of an overall emphasis on reaching out – encouraging contact through external visits and placements, as well as broadening our viewpoints by inviting visitors into our school community.
We also place great importance on learning to contribute – to give. Within the school, Sixth Form students are encouraged to accept positions of responsibility, and sometimes to mentor younger pupils either socially or academically. In terms of the local community, there are many opportunities to make a contribution through such activities as public concerts, working with children and, increasingly, linking to other schools and academies within the UCST Group. Whether giving is seen as charity, as social commitment or simply as a wonderfully-satisfying opportunity to make a difference to other people, the ultimate stage is international – and UCST has a long history of encouraging overseas links, whether through ICT or face-to-face visits.
The outcome of the enrichment programme is that students come to acquire the confidence and capability to take on responsibility – to take charge, whether as a leader or a constructive team member. Think of a project, organise it and reap the benefit! Whether the aim is entrepreneurial, social or creative, the challenge is the same: take charge! If you want to make a video and distribute it on DVD – do it: we’ll help you with the skills. If you want to build a school in Africa – do it. We’ll find the links and provide the support. Each year the Sixth Form is encouraged to make its mark: to make a difference. What would you opt for?
The Sixth-Form Foundation Year
A three-year A-level programme is available for overseas students, starting with a Foundation year which focuses on improving language skills through A-level preparatory studies. This allows new students to continue to study academic subjects at a level appropriate to their needs: this will vary from subject to subject and may be at A-level or GCSE depending on ability. The Foundation year will also include familiarisation with British and European culture, and the programme and timetable will be tailored to individual needs so as to ensure enhanced academic progress and rapid social integration.
