Supporting Your Career
Career Advice
This is available to all sixth formers through individual
meetings or as part of the more formal talks from visiting speakers and through
our Enrichment Programme. There is a wealth
of information available to all so we urge sixth formers to make the most of
accessing this so that they can make informed choices about their future.
Career Mentors
Some may have very definite ideas as to how they want their
early careers to progress (do not panic if you have no idea yet, we are here to
help and guide!). To this end as far as possible
we will provide sixth formers with a link to someone who works in their chosen
area. They can then talk to them via
email/phone to gain a broader understanding of this career path. Sixth formers – your career mentor will also
help to keep you focussed during your studies so that you can achieve the
grades to reach your goal. Many invite
students into their workplace and in some cases students have even been offered
a job by their career mentor.
Work Experience
It is essential to gain as much work experience as possible. This helps to develop a more rounded and
interesting sixth former, and one who has a much better chance of progressing
successfully to university and into a successful career. We support our students in finding work experience
and many actually gain experience in our prep school and in other local junior
schools, teaching games, modern languages and in many other ways.
Leadership Opportunities
Many students take up on one or more of the many leadership
opportunities within the school. School perfects,
heads of houses, mentors for younger pupils, working on our prep site, working
in the school’s reception office, running activities for younger pupils;
leading a school music ensemble or group; captaining a team; taking prospective
parent tours; leading assemblies: there are so many.
Universities and future employers look for candidates with
experience of leadership. Those who have
been leaders develop a broader understanding of how to cope in different
situations, of how to work as a team, of how to make decisions. These skills, learnt in a supportive environment
at school, give students a foot up on the university and career ladder.
The benefits of developing leadership are most pronounced in
a school based sixth form setting.
