Providing a balanced approach

Subjects

GCSE option choices are made during Year 9 with the support of your son / daughter's tutor, subject teachers and from the Careers department.

All pupils will take Mathematics and English. For the majority of pupils there is the opportunity to study two GCSEs, one in English Language and one in English Literature. Pupils will also study Science which can lead to a double award qualification (equivalent to two GCSEs), although some pupils may wish to be considered for the Triple Science.  Acceptance on to the Triple Science course will be at the discretion of the Head of Science who will use available evidence to determine suitability for the course.

Pupils have a choice of 4 options from the list below for those taking Dual Award Science and three for those taking Triple Award.

Pupils receive advice and guidance throughout Year 9 regarding their options. In essence pupils are encouraged to consider a balanced approach to their subject choices.  Pupils are initially given a free choice of any 4 options (or 3 for Triple Science) however, it is difficult from year to year to guarantee certain subject combinations although the likelihood is that vast majority of pupils obtain their choices. We ask pupils to indicate at least one reserve choice in the event that there are clashes between their option choices.

Prior to the submission of the options form in the Spring Term parents will have an opportunity to attend a parents’ evening to discuss option choices with their children’s teachers.  By this stage parents and pupils will have had assessment and reporting data in order to assist them with their choices. In addition their tutor will have discussed options with particular relevance to career implications.

Option choices are confirmed during the summer term. Pupils have a choice of 4 subjects (3 for pupils who are selected for Triple Award Science) in addition to the core subjects mentioned above.
