Pastoral Care at BCS

BCS prides itself in ensuring that the individual needs of every pupil are met.  We have a very high staff:pupil ratio and our staff receive regular training on issues related to the care of our pupils; this enables us to practice what we preach and to deal sensitively and quickly with any concerns pupils may have.

All teachers place the highest priority on helping pupils to learn in a caring and supportive environment. Prefects and fellow pupils are also given the mantle of helping others; our entire school is seen as one family and we all work hard to ensure that the family functions in harmony.  We adopt a “prevention is better than cure” approach and therefore we have developed unique and forward-thinking practices that prevent problems before they start.  However, when inevitably pupils do have difficulties, either through actions of others at school, due to their home life, or possibly due to the pressures of the world at large, then we step in quickly and offer support and guidance. All of the BCS staff and support staff have up-to-date child protection training.

We have a number of staff with specific responsibility for pastoral care in our school, and we also make available to pupils a number of listeners and mentors from outside our organisation. Senior pupils act as mentors for younger children and the effective and active house system across the whole school ensures that vertical groupings are strong and that older and younger pupils quickly get to know one another.  This is further enhanced at meal times when staff and pupils of all ages relax and are actively encouraged to share experiences at the table.
