Aims and Ethos: let me fly!

A successful school is a way of life and a place in which to live that life. We aim to make Bournemouth Collegiate School a comfortable and happy place, since that’s the best setting in which to grow the abilities of all our pupils. But BCS is also a demanding and exciting place where we openly celebrate pupils’ achievements – whether in examinations, on the sports field, in the creative arts or in working for others. Our school has a strong and supportive Christian ethos which guides its approach, but is also open and inclusive, welcoming children from many different cultures, religions and countries. We want pupils to be true to themselves, but also to grow up to respect the individuality of others. We share with other UCST schools a commitment to a set of core characteristics that we aim to develop in every child:

  • The intellectual freedom to be creative;
  • The confidence to initiate;
  • The flexibility to respond to challenge, change and adversity;
  • The compassion to serve others;
  • The spirit to enjoy life;
  • The integrity to be trustworthy;
  • The motivation to have a lifelong love of learning.

THE BCS MISSION:
The Mission of Bournemouth Collegiate School is:

- Our Mission:  Pupils at BCS will be nurtured, inspired and motivated to realise their unique potential. Our young people progress through their school careers with growing confidence in their ability to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

- Our Vision: BCS will be the first-choice provider of independent co-education for pupils aged 3-18 in the Bournemouth and Poole area.

- Our Promise: We will focus on and respond to the individual needs of every child in our care.

Seeking the best in everyone lies at the heart of our vision, and we are focused on some very tangible targets to help us achieve this mission:

We are dedicated to academic excellence for every individual. It is not just a question of a pupil’s rank on an examination list: excelling is about going further, going beyond. Everyone has an aspiration, and our aim is to raise this and surpass it. Every pupil is encouraged to go beyond their expectations – academically, creatively and physically. That is what excellence is about.

We help every pupil to prepare for a competitive world – and a cooperative one. The whole school celebrates achievement as part of its daily approach: achievement in academic work, sport, creative arts or public service. When pupils do achieve success, we notice and rejoice with them – and then urge them to do better! We prepare them for leadership, but also to become effective team members.

Bringing out the best through leadership and personal accountability is very important to us. Pupils need to develop the flexibility to respond to challenge, change and adversity. At the same time, they will want to grow as individuals by taking on positions of responsibility in their form, house or the school.

We love to encourage creativity, in the arts and the sciences. New ideas are born from the creative process and the underpinning of skills that empowers pupils to be different and to make a difference. Every pupil is encouraged to take up a new challenge in the creative arts. Our music is inspirational, and we want everyone to be a part of it. They may prefer art or drama – public speaking or technology. The freedom to be creative doesn’t lie in a set of pre-defined curriculum boxes, it develops when you escape from the box and enjoy life. If they do that, pupils develop the lifelong love of learning that is one of the core aims of UCST.

Above all, through Bournemouth Collegiate School pupils learn to give as well as to take, to share as well as to compete. We take our social and global responsibilities very seriously. Together, we will make a difference, to our pupils and to the world around. That’s the best in everyone.
