Our Lovely Boarding Staff
‘The pastoral care is of a high standard ensuring all boarders are able to flourish both academically and socially.’ Ofsted June 2011
Boarding at Bournemouth Collegiate School
BCS has entered an exciting phase of its development with the recent investment of £2m in order to improve the accommodation at BCS. This includes the new girls’ boarding Lodge House. We are both very happy to continue the ‘outstanding’ Boarding care provided by the dedicated Boarding Staff here.
As a boarder at BCS, we offer your child structured independence, the opportunity to grow and mature within a safe environment. Living with others will help your child to develop a sense of community. They will grow to understand that caring for others is as important as looking after themselves. Boarding at BCS enables your child to develop friendships which will, and do, last long into their future lives. They will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and may be chosen to be a House prefect or indeed Head of Girls’ Boarders or Head of Boys’ Boarders. In these positions they will be expected to, for example, organise themselves and others into arranging an evening entertainment programme for the other boarders; carry out boarding duties; chair the Boarding Council meetings; speak at public events held at the school and also spare time to support others within the boarding community.
With the continued support and care provided by the Boarding Staff, your child will be able to enrich their own life and that of others while developing into a confident, mature and responsible young adult. We help students to become creative, critical, strategic decision-makers, who are ready to respond creatively to the changing world around them. We give them the opportunity to get involved! Whether it be with go-karting, cooking, fashion shows, chess competitions, maths challenges, they are encouraged to have a go as they may find a skill they never knew they had.
The school has a strong pastoral care structure and it is our priority that students always feel happy, valued, listened to and supported. Emphasis is placed on concern for the welfare of others within the school community and when your child arrives as a boarder they are immediately given a ‘boarding buddy’ to show them how things work!
We are proud of our caring pupils within boarding here at BCS and often lose our own two children (Barnaby 5yrs, and Nancy 3yrs) to them. We will undoubtedly find them in one of the boarders’ rooms, on one of the boarder’s scooters or with some of the boarders who have taken time to stop and play with them.
You are never alone as a boarder at BCS; there is always somebody who cares and there is always fun to be had!

Our Boarding Houses
There are now two boarding houses: Lodge House for the girls and Davies House for the boys. Each has their own common rooms and kitchen facilities and for mixed socialising we have ‘The Den’. This is area is a buzz of activity in the evenings where boarders relax after the day at school, make toast, play pool, watch TV and catch up with friends and family via email.
Lodge House (girls)
Joanna Nowak - Head of Girls’ Boarding
Lodge House is a boarding house we enter every day with a happy heart and an open and trusted mind.
My fundamental aim is to encourage the girls to become caring, thoughtful, and confident members of society who are ambitious, perceptive and interesting.
In our house each girl has the right to extend her intellectual growth in an atmosphere of positive encouragement and in conditions that are conducive to learning.
Our supportive family atmosphere encourages boarders to be able to work, play and relax within a safe environment. Our house is based upon mutual respect for all its members. We have equality of opportunity and admiration for all boarders, regardless of their ethnicity, culture or disability.
Our boarding staff live on the school site with their families and pets; this is truly a home from home.
There is always someone to talk to within the boarding house whatever the problem and whatever the time. We are here to care for and guide your child throughout their time here and we enjoy making it a fun and loving environment in which they live.
Davies House (Boys)
Tom French – Head of Boys’ Boarding
In Davies House we welcome boys from many areas of the world and mould them all into young men, ready to take on the challenges which the world throws at them. We do this by creating a family environment, giving them the opportunity to learn many skills, such as pride, leadership, conscientiousness and teamwork whilst living in a growing boarding environment. The boys leave the boarding house with high standards and expectations of life and what lays ahead, confident that they can handle their next steps into adulthood.
We achieve this with various trips and house activities, which take place in many local areas, a luxury afforded to us by our picturesque location on the cliff tops of Bournemouth. Trips out for Go Karting, paintballing, beach games, ice skating and water sports biking in the New Forrest name just a few, but also BBQ’s, evening walks along the beach front, badminton leagues and house Basketball evenings make this a great place to grown up.
Prep
In support of the schools mission to ‘raise standards’, we have decided to extend the prep time for boarders and monitor Years 7-10 in a controlled environment. For Years 11-13, we offer structured independence to complete their prep in their rooms but if work is not being handed in, that student will join the younger year groups for prep.
‘Boarders clearly have a say in the boarding provision and their views are taken seriously.’ Ofsted June 2011
